Abandoned Vehicles

The impounded vehicle section works in conjunction with the Suffolk County Police Department and Department of Public Safety. Vehicles impounded include abandoned vehicles in violation of Section 1224 of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, Road Hazards, Section 511-B impounds (aggravated unlicensed operation of motor vehicles), as well as All Terrain Vehicles. The office staff handles vehicle redemptions and complaints concerning abandoned vehicles. The Division also supplies unclaimed junk vehicles to fire districts enabling them to train for vehicle rescues.

Question: How long can my vehicle be on the street with no plates?
Answer: The law states, “an abandoned vehicle may not be left on the roadway for more than six hours”.

Question: Can the Town remove a vehicle from my property?
Answer: If the vehicle owner cannot get a junk or salvage company to respond to a request for disposal of an unwanted vehicle, the Town will remove the vehicle for a fee.

Question: What happens to a vehicle after the Town takes possession?
Answer: The Town notifies owners and leinholders of the impound. The Town may then take possession of the vehicle ten days after notification. Unclaimed vehicles are then sent to a licensed dismantler or sold at auction. See the Town website for upcoming auctions.
