Housing Choice Voucher Program

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program operates on an annual budget authority of approximately $16,000,000 and currently has the authority to subsidize over 994 families in the Town of Brookhaven. Funding for this program is provided by the United States (US) Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This program provides low and very low income families, the elderly and the disabled the opportunity to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. At this time, our waiting list is closed. Please check our website periodically for any future waiting list updates.

The Department of Housing and Human Services encourages owners of decent, safe, and sanitary housing units to lease to Section 8 families. A list of available units within the Town of Brookhaven is maintained and provided to program participants.

Family Self-Sufficiency

The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program is a voluntary program offered to current participants in the Section 8 HCV Program. The purpose of the FSS Program is to coordinate housing assistance with public and private resources to enable assisted families to achieve a level of self-sufficiency. The objective of the FSS Program is to reduce the dependency of low-income families on welfare assistance, public assistance, or Section 8 assistance. Some of our FSS participants will obtain their first job or a higher paying job, obtain a diploma or higher education degree, or similar goals that will assist the family in obtaining a higher level of economic independence, and in some cases homeownership!
