Karen Dunne Kesnig was elected to the Brookhaven Town Council in 2023. She has served on the Brookhaven Town Planning Board since 2013 where she has gained invaluable experience in the areas of land use, planning and the preservation of open space.
Karen is a longtime civic and community leader. She was a founding member of the Manorville Chamber of Commerce and has served as its President since 2008. Karen served as a Trustee on the Eastport South Manor Board of Education from 1997 through 2019 and was President or Vice President during many of those years. During her tenure she was actively involved in the merger of the Eastport and South Manor School districts and the development and construction of both the Eastport South Manor Junior Senior High School and the Tuttle Avenue School.
Karen has been very involved in the Suffolk County Bar Association for over 30 years. She was Chairperson of both the Grievance Committee and the Fee Dispute Committee for many years and has been a member of the Judicial Screening Committee, the Bench Bar Committee and the Surrogate’s Court Committee.
Karen received her B.A. degree from the State University of New York at Albany and her Juris Doctor from St. John’s University School of Law. She runs a private law practice where she specializes in estate planning and administration. She has often served as a Guardian ad Litem for infants and incompetent adults in the Surrogate’s Court.
Karen has lived in Manorville since 1990 with her husband Richard Kesnig. They have 4 adult children, Arielle Murphy, Charles Kesnig, Shane Kesnig and Laura Kesnig. They share great joy from spending time with their 3 grandchildren Caroline, Beau and Callahan.
