Farmingville, NY – On December 13, the auditorium at Brookhaven Town Hall was buzzing with the proud and smiling faces of student-authors and their parents. More than 60 residents attended the first “Brookhaven’s Got Talent Poetry Slam,” hosted by the Youth Board.
Submissions from students in seventh through twelfth-grade were submitted to the Brookhaven Youth Bureau during the months of September and October. Overall, thirty submissions were received from twenty-eight students. The mission behind the initiative was to encourage and recognize young writers in Brookhaven Town.
Councilwoman Valerie Cartright and Councilman Neil Foley opened the program with an encouraging message for the students. Members of the Youth Board introduced the students before they read their poems and presented the student-authors with individual certificates of congratulations from the entire Town Board.
