When Completed in Mid-February, 75% of Landfill Will Be Forever Capped and Closed
Farmingville, NY – Brookhaven officials today announced the completion of a geo-synthetic liner project on top of the Town’s landfill. The liner covers more than 23-acres of the facility, and with the completion of this project approximately 75 percent of the landfill will be capped and forever closed to receiving any new material.
In 2013, the Brookhaven Town Board rejected a permit sought by the previous administration to expand the height of the landfill by 50 feet. Instead, the Town began the program of aggressively capping the landfill in preparation for the anticipated final closure of the facility in 2024. Final work on the capping project, which has resulted in short term, contained odor events, is expected by mid-February. Since 2012, more than $14.9 million has been spent on the capping projects. The current capping projects include:
- 23.3 acres of drainage composite, 40 mill liner and GV Composite
- 660 vertical linear feet of drilled gas well piping
- 5,000 linear feet of gas collection piping
- 10 modified gas collection risers with a total of 30 horizontal gas collection lines
- 25,000 cubic yards fill layer
- 50,000 cubic yards barrier protection layer
- 25,000 cubic yards topsoil layer
- 30,000 cubic yards sandy loam mix
Brookhaven officials have created a post-closure reserve fund to pay for expenses after the closure of the landfill. To date, more than $9.8 million has been set aside in a dedicated fund for these costs. This fund will grow to more than $20 million by the time the landfill closes. In addition, the Town is pursuing plans to convert the facility into an “Energy Park,” where clean renewable energy production from solar arrays, fuel cells and other means will reduce reliance on fossil fuels and produce an ongoing revenue stream for Town taxpayers.
