Farmingville, NY – On January 9, Councilman Neil Foley (pictured) was on-hand for the demolition of a “Zombie House” located at 5 Celia Street in Patchogue. The abandoned house, which was a dangerous nuisance in the neighborhood for 20 years was strewn with trash and the source of resident complaints. It was demolished in accordance with Chapter 73 of the Town Code which provides a “fast track” to rid neighborhoods of unsafe structures. The cost of demolition and debris removal is the responsibility of the property owner, and the Town places a lien on the property that is then placed on the tax bill. The County reimburses the Town and then they collect the money from the property owner. This was the fourth “Zombie House” demolished by the Town in 2019. In 2018, the Town of Brookhaven demolished 67 “Zombie Houses.”
Councilman Foley said, “This property has been an eyesore for so many years and I am happy that it has finally been demolished. The Town has made great progress by ridding neighborhoods of these ‘Zombie Houses’ and I will continue to target and remove more of them throughout my Council District.”
