Farmingville, NY – The Brookhaven Youth Bureau provides excellent opportunities for second year level master’s degree social work and mental health counseling student interns. The Bureau works in partnership with Adelphi University, Stony Brook University and Long Island University to provide these opportunities for students. Pictured (left to right) are Housing and Human Services Commissioner Alison Karppi, Youth Bureau counselors Liz Derkevics and Amy Gironda, with Youth Bureau interns Gerriann D'Aquisto and Brittany Hayes during Red Ribbon Week at Brookhaven Town Hall.
New York State Licensed Clinical Psychiatric Social Workers offer students individual supervision and task supervision. These placements serve a dual purpose by providing clients with services such as counseling for youth and families, while simultaneously allowing student interns to gain invaluable hands-on experience in their fields of study. Student interns are also provided the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills at the micro, macro and mezzo level.
Councilman Michael Loguercio said, “As a former school board president who served for many years, and now liaison to the Brookhaven Town Youth Bureau, it gives me great pleasure to be able to offer these students the opportunity to continue their education in this field of study, while also providing clients with services that they may require.”
“The Town of Brookhaven’s Internship Program has allowed me to develop pertinent skills in the field of social work and facilitated a greater understanding of the diversified jobs in this career choice,” said Brittany Hayes, current Brookhaven Youth Bureau intern.
“Through my internship with the Brookhaven Youth Bureau, I have gained a lot of experience counseling youth on an individual basis,” said Gerriann D’Aquisto, current Brookhaven Youth Bureau intern. I have also had the opportunity to conduct various presentations and hold Anger Management Groups with teen residents. The Youth Bureau provides great hands-on experience, as well as the gratification of making a real difference in the lives of youth!”
After successfully completing the internship program, students go on to take their ASWB licensing exam and gain professional employment in the field of social work and mental health.
