Town Awarded “Tree City USA” Status for Third Time by the Arbor Day Foundation

Farmingville, NY –  The Arbor Day Foundation announced that the Town of Brookhaven has been designated as a 2018 Tree City USA. This is the third time that the Town has received the award as a result of Supervisor Ed Romaine’s “Greening Brookhaven” initiative to plant 10,000 trees by 2020. The Town also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating environmental improvement and a higher level of tree care, and recognition for meeting the program's four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Supervisor Romaine said, “We have given away and planted thousands of trees throughout the Town of Brookhaven and are getting close to my goal of 10,000. I thank the Arbor Day Foundation for honoring the Town and all the residents who have followed our lead to make Brookhaven a greener place to live.”

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. The Arbor Day Foundation is a million-member nonprofit conservation and education organization with the mission to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees.
