Coram, NY – On May 1, Supvervisor Ed Romaine and the Brookhaven Youth Bureau hosted the “New Trends in Substance Abuse and Addiction Program” at Brookhaven Town Hall. The program was conducted by Long Island Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependency Executive Director, Steve Chassman. Topics covered during the program included:
• How you can help a teen become more aware of the substances within their community;
• How you can help decrease the likelihood of alcohol and drug dependency within your community;
• What the effects are of CBD Oil on teens and adults;
• How the possible legalization of marijuana could affect prevention of drug use in our teens.
This year the Youth Bureau has held three Substance Abuse Education Workshops for Parents. Approximately 200 parents, guardians and social workers have attended these workshops. Funding for the program is provided by a legislative grant through New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle.
“Trends in the drug culture are constantly changing,” Supervisor Romaine said to about 50 people who attended the program. “By participating in this program, you are educating yourselves about how to talk to our youth about a difficult subject, what signs to look for when it comes to substance abuse and preventative measures that can be taken. I want to thank Senator Kenneth LaValle for providing the funding that makes it possible for the Youth Bureau to continue holding these very timely and meaningful workshops.”
The Youth Bureau works in partnership with the Suffolk County Sherriff’s Office to provide drug testing kits to parents and guardians. There is a limit of two kits per family. The kits can be picked up at the Youth Bureau at Brookhaven Town Hall, located at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville.
The Youth Bureau’s next Substance Abuse Education Workshop for Parents will be held at Brookhaven Town Hall, located at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville, on May 17 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information about this program or to RSVP, please call the Youth Bureau at 631-451-8011 or visit the Town website.
