Brookhaven Highway Department Hosts Bicycle Rodeo

Bike Rodeo

Coram, NY –  The Brookhaven Highway Department is hosting a Bicycle Rodeo at Safety Town, 249 Buckley Road, Holtsville. The event, on Saturday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.., encourages children to learn how to safely ride their bikes in a mock-roadway, kid-sized setting.

Located at the Holtsville Ecology Site, Safety Town features roads with turning lane arrows; a railroad crossing; two one-way tunnels to teach children the dangers of one-way streets; and timed traffic lights. Participants of all ages will be evaluated and given feedback on their own bicycle-handling abilities, after proper bicycle safety skills are demonstrated.

“I encourage all Brookhaven residents with school-age children to attend the Bicycle Rodeo,” said Brookhaven Town Superintendent of Highways Daniel P. Losquadro. “It’s a great opportunity for kids to develop proper bike riding skills and become better, more aware bicyclists, to minimize the risk of accidents and injuries on our roadways.”

The Bicycle Rodeo is hosted by the Highway Department’s division of traffic safety in conjunction with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office STOPPED Program. The event is funded, in part, by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration with a grant from the New York State Governors Traffic Safety Committee.

Participants are required to bring their own helmets and bicycles; both will be inspected for safety. The rain date for this event is Sunday, June 23. For more information, contact Safety Town at 631-363-3770.
