Farmingville, NY - – Councilwoman Jane Bonner has announced that the Town of Brookhaven will co-sponsor the 5th annual Jake Engel “Hoops for Hope Barbecue” basketball tournament at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai on Friday, July 12 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The fundraiser is a barbecue and friendly basketball tournament designed to bring together a community that has been hit hard by the heroin epidemic, to raise money for a scholarship in Jake Engel's name, and to raise money for Hope House Ministries. The fundraiser was established in 2015 after Jake Engel’s death from a heroin overdose. The event is free to all and includes a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, barbeque style food, games, raffles and music. Councilwoman Bonner said, “The opioid epidemic is destroying so many lives in our community. The Engel family and Father Frank have made a commitment help families who are struggling to break free of substance abuse and I support their efforts to help our neighbors in need.”
