Port Jefferson, NY – The Brookhaven Town Highway Department recently painted lane markings on six and a half miles of Port Jefferson Village roadways as part of an intermunicipal agreement between the Incorporated Village of Port Jefferson for the purposes of consolidating services and saving taxpayers money. The agreement encompasses several public works services including, but not limited to, snow and ice removal, the application of salt and sand, the installation and dismantling of snow fences, road striping, signage installation, sweeping and pothole repair to Village roadways.
This inter-municipal agreement furthers the Town of Brookhaven’s goal of promoting efficiency between the Town, Villages, and Special Districts through the modernization and reinvention of the delivery of public works services. This consolidation also decreases the financial burden on taxpayers by reducing redundancy in local governments, allowing the Village of Port Jefferson to pursue opportunities for additional shared services while also implementing best government practices.
“I look forward to identifying additional shared services and consolidation opportunities with Mayor Garant,” said Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro. “This was one small example and, hopefully, a first step in larger scale shared services that will continue to save the residents of Port Jefferson Village money.”
Port Jefferson Village Mayor Margot Garant said, “We are happy to work with the Town to consolidate services, help save taxpayer money and improve our infrastructure.”
Brookhaven Town was recently awarded a $20 million Municipal Consolidation and Efficiency Competition (MCEC) grant by New York State. This grant is designed to improve the delivery of municipal services while also reducing the burden on taxpayers by reducing redundancy in local governments, pursuing opportunities for increasing shared services, and implementing modernizations and best practices. This partnership with the Village of Port Jefferson furthers these efforts.
