Farmingville, NY -  On August 2, Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright (back row, right) partnered with the Suffolk County Office of Women's Services, the Suffolk Breastfeeding Coalition, Stony Brook Women Infants and Children (WIC) and many other partner organizations for the fourth annual “The Big Latch On” event. Located again at Percy Raynor Park, the event is one of many celebrated around the world in honor of World Breastfeeding Week.

“I am pleased to partner with the many outstanding organizations in support of families in our community who breastfeed,” said Councilwoman Cartright. “I enjoy visiting with the parents and children who attend this annual event to draw positive attention to the benefits of breastfeeding.”

“Latch On” is a phrase that describes the successful breastfeeding connection between a baby and its mother. Especially in the early months of a baby’s life, breastmilk supports the foundation of a healthy immune system and parent/child bonding, while warding off certain cancers in adults. Breastfeeding can be challenging due to health, environment and legislative obstacles to women nursing in public.
