Farmingville, NY - On September 12, Councilwoman Jane Bonner and Councilman Michael Loguercio were on-hand when the Town demolished a burned-out “zombie house” at 66 Thomas Street in Coram. The house, which sustained significant fire damage, was the source of resident complaints leading to numerous Town of Brookhaven housing code violations. It was demolished in accordance with Chapter 73 of the Town Code which provides a “fast track” to rid neighborhoods of unsafe structures. The cost of demolition and debris removal is the responsibility of the property owner, and the Town places a lien on the property that is then placed on the tax bill. The County reimburses the Town and then they collect the money from the property owner. Councilwoman Bonner said, “Block by block, we have been demolishing abandoned eyesores throughout Brookhaven Town. We could not allow this house to remain here any longer. It was time to knock it down and bring some peace of mind to the residents who live on this very nice block.”
Councilman Loguercio said, “The surrounding residents work hard to maintain their homes and it’s a shame when houses like this negatively impact the property values and quality of life of those who live nearby. I thank the Law Department for their efforts to clean up neighborhoods in my district and throughout the Town of Brookhaven.”
