Solar project will be a major contributor to the Town’s goal of 50% reduction in greenhouse gases

Farmingville, NY -  October 24, 2019 – Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Kevin LaValle announce that an approximately 2.4 megawatt solar car canopy will be constructed at the Long Island Community Hospital Amphitheater. The solar structure will provide clean energy to local residents and support the Town’s Green Energy Initiative. Pictured left to right are Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency (IDA) Deputy Director James Tullo; Brookhaven Town Director of Economic Development/IDA CEO, Lisa Mulligan; IDA Board Chairman, Fred Braun; Supervisor Ed Romaine; Councilman Kevin LaValle; i.on renewables owner, Daniel Prokopy; 5 Star Solar CCO, Sterling Jessop; 5 Star Solar COO, Rick Jessop; SYP Industries owner, Mark Sypher and Ironworkers Local 361 Vice President, John Cush.

Supervisor Romaine said, “When I announced my Green Energy Initiative in 2015, I called for a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from Town operations by the end of 2020, and we are well on our way to achieving that goal. This solar project at the Amphitheater is another leap forward in our commitment to providing renewable energy to the Town of Brookhaven for generations to come.”

The property where the solar project will be constructed is owned by the Town of Brookhaven and operated by JVC Broadcasting. The large solar canopy will provide cover for 6.5 acres of pavement. The total solar installation includes more than 6,100 solar panels with a solar power generation capacity of 2.38 megawatts of clean, renewable energy. This project will add to 90 megawatts of renewable energy projects already installed by the Town and included in its Green Energy Initiative.

Councilman LaValle said, “The Amphitheater parking lot is an ideal location for this solar array project that will provide multiple benefits for our community. Going solar has reduced the Town’s electric power costs as well as the Town’s carbon footprint and that translates to a positive impact on our environment. I am in full support of the Supervisor’s solar programs that make our Town a cleaner, greener place to live.”

IDA Board Chairman, Fred Braun said, “The Town of Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency is pleased to participate in this solar project as we continue to work closely with the Town to achieve our greenhouse gases reduction goal.”

Solar Car Canopy Project Statistics:

  • Total solar capacity: 2.38 megawatts or 2,384 kilowatts
  • Solar panels: 6,192 solar panels (385 watts each)
  • Carport: 18 steel canopies
  • Equipment components: 27 inverters (60 kilowatts each); transformer stations, switch gear equipment, etc.

Daniel Prokopy, owner of i.on renewables said, “I’m grateful for the support from the Town of Brookhaven to bring the development of this solar project over the finish line. The project was awarded a Feed-In-Tariff from PSEG Long Island, and I’m glad to have found C2 Energy Capital as the investor and long-term owner and operator of the solar facility.”

“We are thrilled to be part of a community that values clean, renewable solar power, and applaud the Town’s steps in actively reaching its green energy goals,” said Candice Michalowicz, Co-founder and Managing Member, C2 Energy Capital. “Our team carries with it our enduring values of high quality and safety through every phase of the project. From design to installation and ongoing operations, C2 Energy Capital is committed to a reliable long-term partnership.”
