Farmingville, NY - On October 29, the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau hosted an “Anxiety, Depression and Substance Abuse Workshop” for parents and professionals at Brookhaven Town Hall. Approximately 30 residents participated in the program which was conducted by the Long Island Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence Executive Director, Steve Chassman. Topics covered during the program included:

  • Adolescent behavior and drug development;
  • Why adolescents use drugs;
  • What drugs adolescents are using;
  • How to talk to adolescents about drugs.

This year, the Youth Bureau has held 10 Substance Abuse Education Workshops. More than 350 parents, guardians and social workers have participated in these workshops. Funding for the program is provided by a legislative grant through New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle.

Supervisor Edward P. Romaine said, “The Youth Bureau continues to keep their finger on the pulse of what issues are effecting youth in Brookhaven Town. By providing programs for students, parents and professionals, the Youth Bureau is addressing many issues from different angles and helping our community come to an understanding of what we can do to both help and support our youth.”

“As a parent, councilman and former school board president, it is very gratifying to work with the Youth Bureau on so many impactful programs,” said Councilman Michael Loguercio, Town Board Liaison to the Youth Bureau. “The feedback I have heard regarding these programs has been excellent and we will continue working to reach as many residents as possible.”

The “Anxiety, Depression and Substance Abuse Workshop” was one of three programs hosted by the Youth Bureau during Red Ribbon Week this year. The other two programs included a Vaping Seminar for adults and professionals and the first “Brookhaven’s Got Talent Student Art Show.” Approximately 130 residents participated in these three programs.
