Town Seal

Farmingville, NY - The Brookhaven Youth Bureau will hold Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Workshops in February for youth ranging from 16 to 21 years old. February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. On January 16, the Brookhaven Town Board unanimously approved designating the month of February as “Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month” within the communities of Brookhaven Town.

The Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Workshops will be held every Friday in February from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Youth Bureau office located on the second floor of Brookhaven Town Hall, One Independence Hill in Farmingville. The topics covered during the workshops will include:

  • February 7 – Introduction to Dating Violence and Awareness
  • February 14 – Healthy vs. Unhealthy Relationships
  • February 21 – Managing Emotions
  • February 28 – Risk Factors and Prevention

Nationwide, youth 12 to 19 years of age experience the highest rates of rape and sexual assault, according to Youth.gov. Studies show that approximately 10 percent of all adolescents report being the victim of physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner during a previous year. Girls are particularly vulnerable to experiencing violence in their relationships and are more likely to suffer long-term behavioral and health consequences, including suicide attempts, eating disorders and drug use.
