Town Rec. of Taxes Louis J. Marcoccia Asks Suffolk County to Decide Property Tax Payment Extension

Farmingville, NY - Because of the high unemployment rate due to the COVID-19 virus, Brookhaven Town Receiver of Taxes Louis J. Marcoccia called on Suffolk County to “get off the fence and make a ‘YES or NO’ decision” to extend the current June 1 tax payment deadline. “Many taxpayers call my office daily asking if Suffolk County will be extending the tax payment deadline. I fully share their frustration and concerns; the public has a right to know.”

Marcoccia expressed his displeasure with the length of time Suffolk County officials have taken to arrive at a decision. “In all the meetings that I have participated in, I have repeatedly pressed Suffolk County officials to make a decision; what I get in return is concern but no decision. This type of behavior is very disappointing; our taxpayers deserve better.”

Marcoccia cites Article 27 of the Suffolk County Tax Act which permits a Receiver of Taxes to request action by Suffolk County during emergencies. “Suffolk County is in the height of an unprecedented pandemic,” Marcoccia said, adding “many of our residents are doing their best to cope with meeting essential expenses. In such times, the least they can expect is a straightforward yes or no answer from their County government. I will continue to press this issue and stand in solidarity with the people I represent to get the answers they deserve. The time for indecision is over; the time for leadership is now.”
