Farmingville, NY – On June 9, Councilmember Jonathan Kornreich (second row, left) and Councilwoman Jane Bonner (second row, fourth from right) visited the Sunshine Alternative Education and Prevention Center (SAEPC) in Port Jefferson Station. The center is an alternative to at-home tutoring of high-risk youth, providing one-to-one social-emotional education, conflict resolution, peer mediations, drug and alcohol prevention and other services. The Councilmembers were there to congratulate the students for their accomplishments while in the program and for overcoming the difficult challenges that they faced. They also applauded the SAEPC staff for their dedication and efforts to help the youth of Brookhaven Town. Also pictured are SAEPC teachers, administrators, aides and students.

Councilmember Kornreich said, “Sunshine Prevention Center provides a place of hope and opportunity for so many young people to further their education and develop the skills to pursue a rewarding and fulfilling life.”

Councilwoman Bonner said, “The teachers, staff and students of the Sunshine Alternative Education and Prevention Center are an inspiration and a great example of how struggling children can turn their lives around. It’s an environment that brings out the best in the students so they can move on to happy and productive lives.”

Established in 1992, the Sunshine Prevention Center is a not-for-profit organization, a Town of Brookhaven Youth Agency and a Suffolk County Youth Agency. It is also a BOCES-Arts-in-Education Member, New York State licensed day camp and member of the Prevention Professionals (CPP) recognized through OASAS (NYS Office of Alcohol & Substance Abuse Services).
