Farmingville, NY – At the June 24 Town Board meeting, a resolution was unanimously adopted to establish the Town of Brookhaven Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Advisory Board. The seven-member board will seek to improve cultural understanding, awareness, inclusivity, and visibility of the AANHPI community in Brookhaven Town. The resolution, which was put forward by Councilmember Jonathan Kornreich and co-sponsored by the entire Town Board, recognizes the AANHPI community’s “extraordinary contributions and accomplishments” and its position as a “vital and valued part of the culture, society, and economy of the Town of Brookhaven.” The board will also serve to “provide forums for developing strategies and programs that will expand and enhance the civic, social, educational, cultural, and economic status” of the AANHPI communities.

The resolution includes the appointment of seven AANHPI board members, one for each Town Councilperson and one for the Supervisor, including: Sharoui Li (CD1); Weipin He (CD2); Jim Yeung (CD3); Luisa Urso (CD4); Juveria Shah (CD5); Jainnie Hackman (CD6); and George Wei (Supervisor’s appointment).

Councilmember Kornreich said, “The Asian American community is an important part of cultural and economic life in Brookhaven. It’s vital that their voices are heard, and concerns addressed. This advisory board ensures a seat at the table and open lines of communication with Town government.”
