Supervisor Romaine and Councilwoman Bonner host ice cream party to welcome back senior clubs after being closed since March 2020 due to the pandemic
Farmingville, NY - On Tuesday, July 6, Supervisor Ed Romaine (fourth from left), Councilwoman Jane Bonner (second from left), New York State Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio (right) and Lauren Thoden, representing Town Clerk Donna Lent (center), and Mount Sinai Senior Club President June Schmidt (far left), cut the ribbon to mark the official re-opening of the Rose Caracappa Senior Center to the Senior Clubs, after being closed since March 2020 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. As part of the celebration, ice cream was served to all members of the Mount Sinai Senior Club in attendance.
Currently, the Senior Centers are open for the Town’s Senior Clubs to meet, and once staffing is in place, the facilities will be available for other groups and organizations to schedule use of the meeting rooms, including the in-person dining, games, and activities for the seniors who enjoy socializing and/or participating in our Congregate Nutrition Program, with some COVID-19 safety protocols remaining in place. The Town is excited to take this first step towards normalcy starting with the Senior Clubs and looks forward to being able to offer our senior residents’ access to the Senior Centers.
The Rose Caracappa Senior Center is located at 739 Route 25A in Mount Sinai. Hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. It first opened in 2008 and it is the Town's first and only dedicated Senior Citizen Center. Supervisor Romaine said, “It was great to see so many happy faces and have the opportunity to welcome our seniors back after more than a year. The Rose Caracappa Senior Center has been the ‘home away from home’ for Brookhaven seniors over the years and they all seemed very happy to be back.”
Councilwoman Bonner said, “When I walked in, I saw so many familiar faces that I haven’t seen in such a long time. They are so eager to get back on track with their lives and the Rose Caracappa Senior Center is an important part of their return to normalcy. I thank all the Town staff who helped to make this day happen.
Town Clerk Donna Lent said, “I am happy to see the Rose Caracappa Senior Center open again. It is an important part of daily life for so many of our residents, the Center’s reopening is an encouraging sign that life is back to normal. Our ice cream party is a great way of saying ‘welcome back’ to our seniors.”
