Farmingville, NY – Supervisor Ed Romaine and Brookhaven Councilman Dan Panico have announced that the Town, in partnership with the Montauk Surfcasters Association, will host its 2nd Annual Keith Romaine Memorial Snapper Derby at Union Avenue Dock in Center Moriches, on Sunday, September 12th, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.; the event will take place rain or shine.

The Derby is open to children up to 18-years-old. Participants will need to bring their own fishing pole, bait, and bucket. Each fisherman or woman will receive a complimentary tee-shirt, while supplies last, generously donated by the Montauk Surfcasters Association. Prizes will be awarded for different categories including biggest fish and are being donated by Montauk Surfcasters Association and the Chamber of Commerce of Moriches.

“We are excited to bring this event back for our local families to enjoy an afternoon fishing on our beautiful Moriches Bay,” said Councilman Panico. “While the fish were sparse during last year’s derby, we are hopeful that this will be a banner year.”

Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “The Snapper Derby is the kind of fun community event that Keith championed as a Town Councilman and it is very fitting that it is held in his memory. I thank Councilman Panico and the members of the Montauk Surfcasters Association for honoring him in this way.”

“We are happy to continue what we hope will become a favorite annual tradition,” said William Jakob of Montauk Surfcasters Association. “Events such as this Snapper Derby are a great way to introduce children to fishing in a fun way.”

Participants are asked to make a $5 donation to benefit the Joseph Rera Memorial Scholarship Fund. Joseph was a Center Moriches resident and high school student who had a passion for fishing, and often could be found fishing off Union Dock. He passed away in November. The donation will be collected on the day of the event at check-in.
