Vet Technician

The Board of Ethics was asked to provide an opinion regarding whether it is permissible for a part-time veterinary technician employed at the Animal Shelter to also maintain a part-time position as a veterinary technician at a veterinary services vendor of the Town of Brookhaven.

The Board finds that the employee’s responsibilities as a veterinary technician, at both the Animal Shelter and the vendor, are medical in nature, and do not include any administrative functions. The employee has no authority or involvement in choosing vendors of the Animal Shelter, nor is the employee involved in billing. The employee is not in a position to enrich the veterinary services vendor in her work for the Town, and therefore, her employment as a veterinary technician for the vendor does not create a conflict of interest. The Board of Ethics has determined that the employee can maintain both the position at the Animal Shelter and the position at the veterinary services vendor.
