Supervisor Romaine & Councilman Panico Celebrate Opening of Moriches Bay Athletic Field

Group at ribbon cutting on sports field

Farmingville, NY - On September 10, Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine (back row, 4th from right) and Councilman Dan Panico (back row, 5th from right) attended the official ribbon cutting of the Moriches Bay Recreation Center's multipurpose athletic fields on Opening Day of the Moriches Seahawks football club. This synthetic turf field accommodates football, lacrosse and soccer, to be used by various area youth athletic organizations. The Town purchased the former Knights of Columbus property earlier in the year to establish the hamlet's first ever multipurpose athletic field. It has been constructed using energy-efficient, LED "dark skies" compliant fixtures that reduce light pollution. The next phase will be to renovate the former Knights of Columbus facility into a recreation center that will be used by the Moriches Community Center and other local non-profit groups and organizations.

Supervisor Romaine said, "Every community needs a place for children to engage in sports and recreation activities and this new field really fits the bill. Thanks to Councilman Panico and our Parks Department, families have a state-of-the-art sports facility that they can enjoy for years to come."

"I was extremely pleased to have spearheaded the effort to acquire the Knights of Columbus facility to bring the Moriches Bay area its first ever recreation center," noted Councilman Panico. "The center, coupled with the multipurpose athletic field, is a valuable amenity for our community, and I look forward to the day when we cut the ribbon to the newly renovated building"

Renovations to the building are expected to commence in 2018. Once completed, the building will be managed by the Moriches Community Center, and will be available for use by other local organizations, including senior citizen clubs.
