Farmingville, NY – – At 6:28 pm on October 25, the Coram Fire Department, under the direction of Chief of Department Bill Bozeman, responded to 33 West Denis Lane in Coram for a leaking underground propane tank that was reported to have been damaged by a crew cleaning the property. The firefighters took initial steps to slow the leak. Unable to stop it, the Town of Brookhaven Fire Marshals were requested. When they arrived at the scene and assessed the situation, the Fire Marshals determined that a controlled burn off of the contents of the tank was appropriate to mitigate the hazard. The Town’s propane burn-off torch was brought to the scene, deployed and tied to the leaking tank. The propane was then ignited through the torch and was safely burned off. The incident was mitigated at approximately 11:00 PM.
