Farmingville, NY – – On January 23, Councilwoman Jane Bonner visited the Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School (LADSBS) to celebrate the installation of a new Book Vending Machine. It was purchased with assistance from the Miller Place Parent Teacher Organization (MPPTO) through fundraising efforts over the past year. Located in the school cafeteria, the new Book Vending Machine is stocked with more than 100 books for the students to enjoy.
The Book Vending Machine operates with a custom designed mechanism for token use only. Students earn tokens through the School Improvement Team’s “Kindness Initiative” which was started by Assistant Principal Nicole Farley and the School Improvement Team. Throughout the year students will have an opportunity to receive a “kindness coupon” for going above and beyond by displaying superior character. The coupons are entered into a monthly raffle and winners will receive tokens to use on the MPPTO book vending machine. The Miller Place School District is one of only two on Long Island and the first School District in Suffolk County to provide a Book Vending Machine for students in grades K-8. To make books available to students, the Miller Place PTO donated the Book Vending machines and the books to the Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School, North Country Road Middle School and the Andrew Muller Primary School.
