Farmingville, NY – The Town of Brookhaven’s Department of Waste Management recently conducted a clean- up of an illegal dumping site on Toppings Path in Ridge. A popular trailhead for hikers and mountain bikers, this area has been abused by people dumping construction debris, household garbage and bulk materials. The Town removed 62.8 tons of debris from the site.
“Illegal dumping is a crime and growing problem all across Long Island,” said Supervisor Ed Romaine. “In Brookhaven Town, we are aggressively cracking down on businesses and residents who are responsible for sites like this and we will prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.”
Toppings Path is located in the environmentally sensitive Core of the Central Pine Barrens and is within the Peconic River watershed. This trail runs through the heart of the Pine Barrens connecting Eastport and Calverton, crossing over the historic Paumanok Path. The Town, in cooperation with Suffolk County, NYSDEC and the Pine Barrens Joint Policy and Planning Commission are working to clean this area up and prevent illicit activities from occurring again and to restore the area back to its natural beauty.
