Farmingville, NY – On July 21, Supervisor Ed Romaine (center) was joined by Town, County and State officials at the Suffolk Independent Living Organization (SILO) office in Medford to celebrate the 33rd anniversary of the signing of the American Disabilities Act (ADA). Founded in 1982 by June Roberts, SILO asserts that people with disabilities have the same rights and responsibilities, needs and desires, as their non-disabled peers. The organization has helped over 17,000 individuals with disabilities throughout the Long Island region. It is chartered by the New York State Legislature and contracted by NYSED, ACCES-VR, ILC Department to provide independent living services throughout the Long Island Region. Their many programs and services have seen a significant increase in individuals and their families seeking assistance to overcome the many obstacles that people with disabilities encounter each day.
