Town Demolishes Burned Out “Zombie House” on Mill Road in Coram

Two men and a crane at home to be demolished

Farmingville, NY – On May 30, Supervisor Ed Romaine (left) and Councilman Michael Loguercio (right) were at 427 Mill Road in Coram for the demolition of a burned out “zombie house.” The house, which has been an eyesore in the neighborhood for many years, had sustained serious fire damage and was the source of resident complaints leading to numerous Town of Brookhaven housing code violations. It was demolished by employees from the Town’s Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management in accordance with Chapter 73 of the Town Code which provides a “fast track” to rid neighborhoods of unsafe structures. The cost of demolition and debris removal is the responsibility of the property owner, and the Town places a lien on the property that is then placed on the tax bill. The County reimburses the Town and then they collect the money from the property owner.

Supervisor Romaine said, “People in this neighborhood work hard to maintain their homes and it’s a shame when eyesores like this one negatively impact property values and their quality of life. Thanks to the Town’s Law Department and our Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management, this one is gone and the Town will continue to do everything we can to rid our communities of these zombie houses.”

Councilman Loguercio said, “Another dangerous eyesore has been removed from the community as we continue to clean up neighborhoods in my district and throughout Town of Brookhaven. I urge anyone who has a house like this near them to report it to the Town and we will take whatever action is necessary to have it demolished.”
