Farmingville, NY – On January 23, Councilmember Valerie M. Cartright gave opening remarks to start the Lunar New Year Celebration at the Holiday Inn Express in Stony Brook. The annual celebration and Community Cultural Program featured a variety of activities.
Folk songs, children's dances, drum dances, violin and operatic performances enthralled the crowds. The organizers of the event, the Suffolk County Asian American Advisory Board along with the Holiday Inn Express, welcomed performers from the Stony Brook Youth Music Club, Stony Brook Chinese School Dance Groups I and II, the Long Island Chinese Dance Group and Song Island Performing Arts Group.
"This family event broadens our understanding of traditions of our neighbors and friends. I embrace the diverse cultural fabric of our Town, and enjoy the annual celebration of Lunar New Year with citizens around the world," said Councilmember Cartright.
The Lunar New Year began on January 28th and lasted until February 2. In Chinese culture this is the year of the Rooster. People born in the year of the rooster are considered beautiful, kindhearted, hard-working, humorous and honest.
