Town is among six local governments in the running for $20 million award
Farmingville, NY – Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine (standing) and the mayors of eight incorporated villages within the Town of Brookhaven recently met at Town Hall to work on plans that will identify areas to share municipal services. Joining this Municipal Consolidation Leadership Council were officials from various Town departments, including Information Technology, Tax Receiver, Assessor, Purchasing, Highway and Waste Management. The group’s objective is to identify municipal services that can be consolidated, resulting in a savings for their mutual taxpayers.
“I thank all the mayors and Town officials who participated in our first meeting,” said Supervisor Romaine. “We discussed many different areas where consolidation can streamline departmental services and save money. The real winners will be the taxpayers who will keep more of their hard earned dollars and still receive the services that they are accustomed to.”
Brookhaven has been selected as a finalist in Phase I of the Municipal Consolidation and Efficiency Competition, a $20 million competition sponsored by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to reduce the heavy property tax burden in New York State. As a finalist, the Town is one of six local governments to be awarded a $50,000 grant for proposals to develop consolidation, shared services, and other taxpayer savings plans as part of the statewide competition. Working together with local villages and other municipal entities, Brookhaven Town’s plan will target savings through a combination of consolidation of special districts and shared services. The Municipal Consolidation and Efficiency Competition winning partnership of local governments will be announced this summer.
