Farmingville, NY – On May 13, Brookhaven Town Clerk Donna Lent (second from right) attended the unveiling of a historic marker in honor of Lillian Devere, founding member of the Lake Ronkonkoma Equal Rights Suffrage Club.

The Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association secured a William G. Pomeroy Foundation grant for the marker which was placed at the American Legion Post 155 on Church Street in Lake Ronkonkoma. The grant is part of a program to highlight the New York State Women’s Suffrage Centennial (1917-2017) and the people, places and events instrumental in women gaining the right to vote.

In addition to her efforts to win the vote, Lillian Brown Devere was a United States Navy Veteran and founder of the World War I Memorial Rock at the American Legion Post. She also founded the Lake Ronkonkoma Free Library and the Lake Ronkonkoma Theatrical Club.
