Supervisor Romaine Warns Residents of Recycling Violations Scam

Farmingville, NY – Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine is warning about a scam targeting residents that claims they are in violation of recycling codes and demands payment of a fine ranging from $50 to $1000. The scam was uncovered after a Brookhaven Town resident reported receiving a letter by a fictional company named Real Community Matters.

Supervisor Romaine said, “This letter is obviously a scam, but it looks real enough to convince some people to pay the fine. The Town Attorney is reviewing this matter thoroughly and will ask the Suffolk County District Attorney and Suffolk County Police Department to commence a full investigation. I urge anyone who gets this letter in the mail to immediately contact the Town of Brookhaven’s Call Center at 631-451-TOWN (8696).”
