Brookhaven Town Hosts Two Well Attended Substance Abuse Workshops for Parents

Speaker at Substance Abuse Workshop

Farmingville, NY - The Town of Brookhaven’s Youth Bureau held two well attended Substance Abuse Education Workshops for parents this month. The workshops were conducted in both Spanish and English and are called “The More You Know.” The first workshop was held on June 6 at Brookhaven Town Hall and the second workshop was held on June 19 at the Patchogue-Medford Library in Patchogue (pictured). Topics included adolescent behavior and development, why they may choose to use drugs, what drugs adolescents are using and how to talk to them about drugs. This program is made possible by a grant through the New York State Division of Criminal Justice.

Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “Substance abuse is at an epidemic level and we need to focus on educating our young people and their parents. I commend our Youth Bureau for leading the way with these workshops that can help save lives.”

Councilman Michael Loguercio, Town Board liaison to the Youth Bureau said, “As a first responder myself, I see the devastation that substance abuse causes families. We cannot just sit back and let it happen and that’s why we’ve initiated this very important program through our Youth Bureau.”

The Youth Bureau will continue hosting workshops throughout this year on drug and alcohol abuse. For information regarding future workshops, please call Lizabeth Derkevics, LCSW-R or Amy Gironda, LCSW-R at the Youth Bureau at 631-451-8011.
