Councilman LaValle Honors Veterans Advocate John Rago

Farmingville, NY - At the January 24 Town Board meeting, Councilman Kevin LaValle honored John Rago of Coram upon his retirement from Suffolk County United Veterans where he served as Outreach Coordinator for the Supportive Services for Veterans Families Program. Mr. Rago also served as the Town of Brookhaven Veterans Service Officer prior to working for Suffolk County United Veterans.

John is a Navy veteran, serving two years on active duty (1970 to 1972) and six years as a Naval Reservist. While on active duty, he served aboard nuclear submarines as a sonar technician aboard the fleet ballistic missile submarine USS. Francis Scott Key and on the fast attack submarine USS. Grayling (SSN 646).

After discharge from the Navy, John had a 40 year career as an appliance service technician for Westinghouse, Amana and General Electric until he retired in 2011. John is an active member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is currently the Commander of VFW Post 400 in Farmingville and serves on the Veterans Advisory Board of the towns of Riverhead and Brookhaven and Congressman Lee Zeldin.

Councilman Lavalle said, “It is an honor for me to recognize John for all he has done in support of veterans throughout the community and for his military service. Although he is now retired, I know that he will continue to be a strong advocate for veterans whenever they need him.”
