Farmingville, NY - On June 7, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Dan Panico launched the Town of Brookhaven’s Food Scrap Composting pilot program at Town Hall. The voluntary program, initiated by the Town’s Department of Waste Management, is open for all Town Hall employees to participate.
Supervisor Romaine said, “Our Food Scrap Composting program is another way that we are helping to reduce our waste and make Brookhaven a greener place to live. This is just the first step in what we hope will become a town wide effort in the future.”
Councilman Panico said, "We must provide alternative waste management solutions like these if we are going to provide a cleaner, greener earth for future generations."
Items such as banana peels, apple cores, coffee grinds and other food waste will be deposited in special Organic Material Collection containers that will be placed in the Town Hall cafeteria and various offices throughout the building. The containers are then collected by “Compost Captains” who will bring the bagged materials to a central collection area in the north parking lot at Town Hall (pictured at left). All the collected materials will be composted in specially designed compost tumblers by a trained Town of Brookhaven compost specialist. The generated compost will then be cured, which takes up to three months. The finished product will be utilized in the garden beds around Town Hall and other Town facilities.
