Farmingville, NY - On Tuesday August 15, 2017 Supervisor Romaine joined with the staff of the Port Jefferson Brewing Company to announce their involvement in Brookhaven’s “Brew to Moo” program. The Town’s “Brew to Moo” program is aimed to reduce the amount of local brewery by-product in our waste stream. Local breweries and distilleries produce tons of spent grains which have reduced caloric content but provide protein and fiber that can supplement corn for feed. The Town of Brookhaven will regularly pick up the material and deliver it to farms and ranches to be used as feed for their animals. The Port Jefferson Brewing Company is the second local brewer to sign onto the program, the first was The Brick House Brewery of Patchogue. The first ranch to sign on to the program is the Double D Ranch in Manorville. Using spent grains for livestock feed dates back to the advent of beer and with corn and other commodity prices rising, the use of brewery by-products is growing.
