Farmingville, NY - On Wednesday, September 20th, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Dan Panico were joined by fellow elected officials from New York State, Suffolk County, Mastic Beach Village, the Mastic Beach Ambulance Company, the Mastic Beach Fire Department and local civic groups to officially break ground on the new headquarters for Mastic Beach Ambulance, to be constructed at 343 Main Street, in downtown Mastic Beach.
The property once served as home to a hardware store and then a super market, but once vacated, became a constant source of blight. The Town acquired the property in 2016, and subsequently demolished the building, which paved the way for construction. The new headquarters will better serve the ambulance company’s 100 members, with a variety of additional amenities including more training rooms, but even more importantly, will help these volunteer members to serve Mastic Beach residents more efficiently.
Supervisor Romaine said, “The men and women of the Mastic Beach Ambulance Company will soon have a new headquarters that help them do their job more efficiently. We appreciate their commitment to help their neighbors every day and thank them for the sacrifices they make to serve their community.”
Councilman Panico emphasized the important impact that the new facility will have on the neighborhood, and that it will serve as a stimulus in the overall redevelopment of the once thriving downtown. “This will be the first new building in downtown Mastic Beach in decades,” said the Councilman. “It will serve the needs of the ambulance company and the residents, replacing what was formerly a shuttered cement block building with a colonial maritime architectural building that will be staffed 24/7. It will undoubtedly assist in our efforts to revitalize the downtown.”
Mastic Beach Ambulance Company Chief Charles Voelger said, “This new facility will allow the ambulance company to better serve the whole district, house our needed equipment, and continue to provide the excellent EMS services the community expects every day.” "All the members of the Mastic Beach Ambulance Company and residents of Mastic Beach are grateful to the hard work and efforts of our Councilman and the Town of Brookhaven to make this day happen. We have worked for many years on finding the right location and design for a facility to serve the needs of Mastic Beach, and look forward to this building being the beginning of a new period of prosperity for entire community."
Design of the two-story, 18,000-square-foot new headquarters building was performed by LKMA Associates and Nelson and Pope. Construction of the facility will be led by Stalco Construction, with Premiere Heat serving as the HVAC contractor; WHM Plumbing as the plumbing contractor and Eldor Contracting as the electrical contractor. When completed, the new building will house five drive-through vehicle bays, instead of only three one-way bays in the current facility, to allow for more efficient emergency response and equipment maintenance operations. The drive-through design of the bays also further improves the efficiency and safety of operations by allowing the company members to respond out of the building onto both Main Street and Diana Drive. The new building will accommodate up to 15 vehicles and will feature more updated EMT volunteer housing, equipment storage, and decontamination facilities.
“This is a great day for Mastic Beach residents. Finally, after many years of operating out of a small building, the Mastic Beach Ambulance breaks ground on their new Headquarters,” said former Mastic Beach Village Mayor Bill Biondi. “When I was mayor of the village, I supported this project 100%. The Ambulance deserves a better environment to operate and train our future paramedics.”
