Farmingville, NY – For the second consecutive year, Brookhaven Town’s Division of Veterans Services Food Drive will provide more than 300 bags of food to veterans in need and their families. The drive was held from June 11 through June 29, and residents and local businesses contributed non-perishable foods to four Town drop off locations in Coram, Farmingville, Blue Point and Mount Sinai. The Division of Veterans Services is working with Long Island Cares Inc., which is supplementing the food drive with 300 bottles of water. Rocky Point Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 6249 Commander Joe Cognitore said, “It has been very gratifying working with Brookhaven Town’s Division of Veterans Services. In the past two years, we have identified and provided hundreds of bags of food to veterans and their families throughout the Town. I thank the Town for its efforts and look forward to continue working with them toward helping veterans.”
Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “There are many veterans in Brookhaven Town who have courageously served our country and are in need of assistance. I am very grateful to all the residents and local businesses that have contributed to this drive to make it a success. I also want to thank Long Island Cares for supplementing the drive with bottled water, and our Division of Veterans Services for organizing this drive and ensuring the food gets to veterans in need and their families.”
Councilman Michael Loguercio, the Town Board Liaison to the Division of Veterans Services said, “The Division of Veterans Services is continuing to work with veterans to identify those who are in need. This food drive is just one service we provide and I encourage all Brookhaven veterans to contact our Division of Veterans Services to find out about benefits you may be entitled to.”
Long Island Cares Inc. Chief Government Affairs Officer Michael Haynes said, “In our role as a regional food bank for Long Island, Long Island Cares, Inc.- The Harry Chapin Food Bank is proud to support Supervisor Romaine and the Town’s Division of Veterans Services Annual Food Drive. Collecting enough food to compile 300 bags in such a short period of time is quite an impressive feat, and we hope the veterans served will enjoy the beverages we were able to supply. We commend the Supervisor and the Town for their unwavering commitment in providing necessary services to veterans, and we look forward to doing even more together in the future.”
The Division of Veterans Services has distributed more than 200 bags of food to veterans who visited the office and worked with local VFW representatives to distribute the donations directly to veterans and their families. A portion of the donations are being kept at the office of the Division of Veteran Services to distribute on an as needed basis.
