Farmingville, NY – Councilwoman Jane Bonner has announced that the 4th annual Jake Engel “Hoops for Hope Barbecue” and basketball tournament at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai raised a record-breaking $15,000, more than $5,000 over last year’s total. The “Hoops for Hope” fundraiser was established in 2015 after Jake Engel’s death from a heroin overdose. The event, which was held on July 13, brought together hundreds of people from the community to help fight heroin addiction, raise money for a scholarship in Jake Engel's name, and to help fund Hope House Ministries. Pictured left to right are Jake’s parents Bob and Karen; his brothers Geoff and Patrick; and Councilwoman Bonner. The free event included a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, barbeque style food, games, raffles and music.
Councilwoman Bonner said, “Brookhaven residents really outdid themselves this year by donating more than $15,000. I thank the Engel family and Hope House Ministries for all they do to help fight drug addiction in our community. We need to keep up the effort until we win the battle against this devastating threat to our young people.”
Geoff Engel said, "We would like to thank everyone who made the Hoops for Hope Barbecue such a special event this year. Without the community's love and support, we would not be able to realize our mission of bringing awareness, community, and change to all people negatively affected by substance abuse in Suffolk County, New York."
