Farmingville, NY – On Tuesday, August 21, Supervisor Ed Romaine (right), Councilwomen Jane Bonner (left) and Valerie Cartright (center) unveiled the Town’s two, new Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations located at Heritage Park in Mount Sinai. The installation of EV stations at accessible and convenient locations in Brookhaven supports the use of electric vehicles by residents and visitors. The Town also installed two EV Charging Stations at the Moriches Bay Recreation Center and the Parks Administration Building in Centereach. The cost of the EV Charging Stations is approximately $22,000 per site. Most of the costs are funded through a grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA) and rebates from LIPA. The stations will be operational by mid-September.
Supervisor Romaine said, “By installing charging stations, we are making it convenient for our residents to use plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and improves air quality. We will continue to place stations throughout the Town, so more people will feel comfortable knowing that they can go out, visit Town facilities and charge up their cars.”
Councilwoman Bonner said, “Electric vehicles are becoming more prevalent, so we need to accommodate those people who are making the effort to protect the environment. I am pleased that the first two stations were installed in my council district and I join the Supervisor in his efforts to go green.”
Councilwoman Cartright said, “This is a step in the right direction towards the continued reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The benefits of electric vehicles are obvious; not only are you reducing your emissions for a positive impact on the environment, but also reducing the amount of money you spend on gas. I am pleased to join my colleagues to introduce this electric charging station to the community and provide those benefits to Brookhaven residents.”
Electric vehicles are quieter, cleaner, and do not require the import and transport of fossil fuels. On top of the environmental benefits, electric cars have fewer moving parts, don’t require oil changes, and cost less to operate (estimates indicate about 40-50% less in operating costs for EVs compared to gas vehicles).
The EV Charging Stations are part of Supervisor Romaine’s “Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Initiative,” a 5-year Capital Plan to achieve a 50% reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 2020. The plan focuses on Town-owned Buildings and Facilities, Traffic Controls, Street Lights and Town Vehicles. The cost of the EV Charging Stations is approximately $22,000 per site.
