Loguercio Announces “Teal Connections” Event in Honor of National Ovarian Cancer Awareness

Town Seal

Farmingville, NY – On September 26, Councilman Michael Loguercio, the Town of Brookhaven Division of Women's Services and the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) will present “Teal Connections – Ovarian Cancer Knows No Age,” a panel discussion featuring four women who will share their experience with an ovarian cancer diagnosis. This free event will be held from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Brookhaven Town Hall, One Independence Hill in Farmingville. Educational resources will be available to attendees and light refreshments will be served. RSVP to Brookhaven Town’s Division of Women's Services at 631-451-6146 no later than September 20.

According to the NOCC, more than 22,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, and over 14,000 women die from the disease. Unfortunately, most cases are diagnosed in later stages, when the prognosis is poor. However, if diagnosed and treated early, when the cancer is confined to the ovary, the five-year survival rate is over 90 percent. That is why it is imperative that the early signs and symptoms of the disease are recognized, not only by women, but by their families and the healthcare community. Visit the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition website for more information about ovarian cancer.

At the August 2 Town board meeting, Councilman Loguercio sponsored a resolution, which was unanimously adopted, to declare September to be “Ovarian Cancer Month” in the Town of Brookhaven.

Pins and bracelets honoring National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month will be sold at the “Teal Connections” event. If you are interested in purchasing one, or if you'd like to make a donation, please contact Brookhaven Town’s Division of Women's Services at 631-451-6146.
