Farmingville, NY – Supervisor Ed Romaine, Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro and the Brookhaven Town Youth Bureau have joined together to present a free, interactive distracted driving program for teen drivers and their parents. During the event, which will be held Tuesday, October 23, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at Brookhaven Town Hall, instructors will discuss the dangers of driving impaired and distracted, while demonstrating the negative impacts with state-of-the-art equipment.

Each day in the United States, more than eight people are killed and 1,161 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Supervisor Romaine said, “Motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death among young people ages 16 to 24 who are easily distracted with phones and texting. They need to be educated about the dangers and I thank Superintendent Losquadro for addressing this important issue in order to help them make better life decisions.”

“I encourage all parents and their teen drivers to attend this invaluable program,” said Superintendent Losquadro. “Anything that takes a driver’s attention off the road is extremely dangerous and, in the case of texting and driving, oftentimes illegal. Young drivers need to understand that one poor choice could impact the rest of their lives.”

“As a parent, first responder, insurance professional and former school board president, I witness all too often the deadly consequences that are caused by distracted driving,” said Councilman Michael Loguercio, the Town Council liaison to the Youth Bureau. “It is our hope that if we can educate teens on the importance of careful driving and the ramifications of their actions when they drive distracted, we can literally save lives.”

More than 150 teen drivers attended the Distracted Driving program last year. Pre-registration is required; call the Youth Bureau at 631-451-8011 by October 16. Visit the Youth Bureau page for more information about this program or the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau.
