What type of fire extinguishers and how many are recommended for the home?

For the home, select a multi-purpose extinguisher (Class ABC) that is large enough to put out a small fire, but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle. Typically, a 2.5-pound fire extinguisher sold at your local home improvement store will be a suitable size. At least one extinguisher should be placed on every level of your home. It is recommended to have additional extinguishers in extra hazard areas such as:

  • Garages
  • Kitchens
  • Laundry rooms
  • Workshops

Install fire extinguishers close to an exit and keep your back to a clear exit when you use the device so you can make an easy escape if the fire cannot be controlled. If the room fills with smoke, leave immediately.
