How many smoke and carbon monoxide alarms should I have in my single-family home, and where should they be placed?

Smoke alarms should be placed in the immediate vicinity of bedrooms (i.e. hallways), in each room used for sleeping, and in each story within the home including the basement. Carbon monoxide alarms should be placed on each story containing a sleeping area and, be within 15 feet of that area.

Carbon monoxide alarms should also be installed on each story that contains a carbon monoxide source.
